From install to first generated document.
Estimated time: an afternoon for the install + first-template walkthrough. Plan a few days to a week for QA before promoting to production users.
Before you start
- A Salesforce org with admin access (sandbox is fine for the install + first template)
- A trial activation token (request one from /contact)
- One target object to template against — Quote, Opportunity, Case, or any custom object
- (Optional, day 2) A DocuSign or Adobe Sign account if you want to dispatch for signature
Step 1 — Install the managed package
When your trial is provisioned you'll receive an email with the install URL and an activation token. Visit the install URL, choose "Install for All Users", and paste the token when prompted on first launch of the DocRoute app.
The package adds a permission set (DocRoute_Admin), a handful of custom
objects (Templates, Selection Rules, Generation Jobs, Brand Themes), and a Lightning app
with five tabs (Templates, Rules,
Generations, Themes, Setup).
Step 2 — Author your first template
Open the Templates tab → New Template. The guided form asks for:
- Name — e.g. "Standard quote"
- Target object — Quote, Opportunity, etc.
- Page size and margins — defaults to US Letter / 1" margins
- Brand theme — pick one or leave blank to use the default
Click Save & Open to enter the builder. Design header, body, and footer
with the WYSIWYG editor. Drop in merge fields via the Variables
dropdown — pick from any field on the target object or any related record (e.g.,
{{Quote.Account.Name}}, {{quote.lineItems[].product.Name}}).
Click Publish when ready.
Step 3 — Define a selection rule
Open the Rules tab → New Rule. Selection rules tell DocRoute which template to use for which records. For a starter rule:
- Target object — same object as the template
- Criteria — leave empty for now (this rule matches all records of the target object)
- Template — the template you just published
- Priority — set to
100(lower numbers win; this is your fallback rule)
Save the rule. Later you'll add more specific rules above this one — different templates for different regions, product lines, or deal sizes.
Step 4 — Add the Generate Document quick action
On a Lightning record page for your target object, click the gear → Edit Page → Highlights Panel, and add the DocRoute · Generate Document quick action. Save and activate. The button now appears on every record of that object type.
Step 5 — Generate your first document
Navigate to a sample record. Click Generate Document. DocRoute applies your selection rules, picks the matching template, assembles the data, renders the PDF, and saves it to Salesforce Files attached to the record. You'll see an inline preview and a link to the generated file.
Step 6 — Add e-signature (optional)
Open Setup → Integrations, choose DocuSign or Adobe Sign, and paste your provider credentials. Once connected, the Send for Signature button appears on every generated document. See the integration setup guide for the full per-provider walkthrough.
What to monitor in the first month
- Generations tab — daily check for any failed renders or selection-rule fall-throughs.
- Volume meter — see how many doc gens you've used vs your plan limit.
- Rule priority order — most "wrong template" issues are priority ordering, not template content.
